Accessibility report on Calendar module

KW: These notes represent my best attempts to record what was happening as Phil accessed the Vista test site at http://fusion.webct.com:7003. It may not seem like much, but we spent 2 hours reviewing the site.

  1. Issue: Pop-up checker window comes up and is read, but the Java Security Certificate window displays on top of it.

Work-around: Get rid of the Security window (F6 to move between windows or Alt-N menu bar, then ESC to get out of the menu bar). Use the JAWS cursor to get back to the Pop-up checker window (press Insert+R until "Unrestricted," is spoken, then moved to OK button and performed a left mouse-click) (numpad /).

Comments: Exited Vista site. Allowed pop-ups for domain. Logged in again. No Pop-up checker window on subsequent attempts; Java Security Certificate window comes up. Hit Alt+A for Always; the window disappeared. But, had to hit Win+M to move to the desktop, Win+Shift+M to return to the My WebCT page.

  2. Issue: Frame names

Resolution: "Application container used for background tasks" frame name is too long; suggest using "Application container."

Resolution: "Tabs for navigating to user-specific features" frame name is too long; suggest using "MyFeatures tabs."

Resolution: "Contains the course toolbar and content" frame name is too long; suggest using "Course toolbar and content."

,p>Resolution: "Hidden frame used by application for background tasks" frame name (there are four of these) is too long; suggest using "Hidden background tasks."

  3. Issue: My WebCT tab reads "List of one item. Bullet link My WebCT. List end."

Resolution: A transparent graphic with an alt tag explaining the function of the bullet should appear before the list/tabs. For example, Active tabs are
indicated by a bullet

  4. Issue: Calendar Day reads "This page link graphic small_close." There is no meaningful alt tag.

Resolution: Include an alt tag that says "Close" or "Hide Calendar Day."

  5. Issue: Initial loading of a page prevents user interaction - can't arrow or tab.

Work-around: Move focus away from WebCT (alt+tab, or Win+m). Then, return focus to WebCT (alt+tab, or Win+shift+m).

  6. Issue: [This page link graphic] "small_close" graphic is missing an alt tag. Pressing Enter/spacebar or routing the JAWS cursor to the location and performing a left mouse-click, has no effect.

  7. Issue: Moving to the "To Do List" or "Add Item" pages places focus on the frame, not on the heading.

  8. Issue: "To Do List" appears twice at the top of the frame.

    Resolution: Eliminate non-heading text.

  9. Issue: "Add Item" appears twice at the top of the frame.

    Resolution: Eliminate non-heading text.

  10. Issue: Clicking the add item button produces a table with two columns, Priority and Item Text. Once an item is added, a button ("Action links for this item") appears to the right of the Item text.

Resolution: The Action links for this item button should appear in a separate column. This would allow screen-reader users to move up and down in the column using table reading functions - would read items in the first column as row headers.

Comments: Navigation and usability would be enhanced by using a three column table with column headings in the following order:

    Item Priority Action
    Some activity 1 Edit/Delete

Comments: It would be nice to be able to choose a date while adding an item to the To Do list, and have it automatically populate the calendar.
